"City Nights" with Neo Geisha [Nov. 6th, 2009|07:55 am]

davecharsley
[mood | cold]
[music |Epica - Kindom of Heaven]

I'm back from another Whitby Goth Weekend and this year was quite different from other years I've gone to.  There was a lot of my friends missing but I did manage to catch up with [info]avatarsteve and his wife Dan,  [info]druidess1982 and Nikolai, Leeds photographer Simon Cliff, models Violet Magenta and Flamin Hell, the newly engaged [info]davefish and [info]keris[info]frozen_amaranth, Shadowkat, [info]devolutionmag, [info]nevroli and [info]fuzzygoth.   I also had a nice chat with Biff Byford from Saxon about his latest album and his move back to Yorkshire from France.  One of the highlights of the weekend for me though, was seeing Uninvited Guest play at the Resolution on the Saturday, a tremendous band!

Today's images are from a night shoot I did last week with the lovely Neo Geisha.  Shooting at night always adds new challenges and this time I wanted to keep some of the ambient light from the city in the background.  I ended up giving Neo Geisha a quick burst of light from three flash guns arranged around her but let the shutter remain open for a little while to soak up the ambient light.  It was a bit of a hit and miss affair but we managed to get a small set, four of which I'm posting today.

LiveJournal Major Notes: Spam counter-attack, RSS feeds again, CSI Deadly Intent contest [Nov. 5th, 2009|01:15 pm]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , ]

The empire strikes back

In recent weeks, we've taken huge steps towards blocking spam accounts on LiveJournal. In fact, we've suspended as many as 30,000 accounts in a single day! We've implemented several pre-emptive measures to prevent the creation of spam accounts, and we've honed our detection of suspicious content. Spam bots are a crafty lot, so we'll continue to refine our tactics and keep up the good fight to keep you safe from spam attacks on LiveJournal.

RSS feeds again

If you're addicted to [info]xkcd_rss, [info]icanhaschzbrgr, or other syndicated feeds, we're pleased to report that we've resolved the update error that was mucking up your RSS feeds. While content was being pulled correctly, it wasn't being posted to the feeds themselves. Late last week, we finally nailed down what we hope was the root problem, so content should post properly. We thank you for your patience.

Wii have killer CSI Deadly Intent contests!

[info]c_s_i

If you're a gamer who loves CSI, have Wii got news for you! [info]c_s_i is sponsoring killer contests. Simply post a question to a member of the CSI crew. There's also a fantastic monthly contest. To enter, join [info]c_s_i, play the online version of CSI: Deadly Intent, and respond to a two-part query for a chance to win a Wii! Entries will be judged on composition and originality. Sorry, but you must be a U.S. resident and over 18 years old to participate. Check out the rules here.

Enveloped in postcards

Last week, we asked you to send in postcards to help us decorate our drab concrete walls. Here's a photo of the results so far! Thank you so much and please keep them coming! You can mail them to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. The inevitable Whitby blog! [Nov. 4th, 2009|09:09 am]

nephilimbabe
As this was only our second excursion t'north, the excitement was pretty immanent. It only took us four and a half hours to reach our B&B, which considering my map reading skills took us past the A64 instead of turning onto it, that wasn’t bad. I must admit, none of us relished the thought of driving through Pickering again, with any number of pigs waiting to pull us over for any motoring technicality, so this slight detour proved rather handy.

So, Thursday 29th October at four thirty pm, we arrived in Whitby. A quick chat to the landlord, bundled all our luggage to the very top of the stairs (5 flights in all was not much fun I can tell you!) then headed out to Gatsby’s for tea. Next stop – The Shambles for the DV80s night with good friend [info]katykitten playing a short guest slot. Pretty much everybody we knew that was attending this Whitby turned up which added to the excitement, and the beer flowed well. Come midnight we headed back home not wishing to over do it on the first night like so many previous, and picked up a pizza on the back to consume in our small front garden as no take-away food was allowed into the B&B!

Friday 30th October. One very nice cooked breakfast later (with [info]lil_red_neck making no effort to attend) we headed off to the usual pubs (Elsinore, Resolution etc) and the various staggering around for supplies. Loopy & I agreed that we we’re in the mood for bizarres and stalls, although, my mind was solely on the evenings DJing at The Spa. Come afternoon, we were back in The Res to support friends in Last July.

Before I knew it, it was 6.45pm and we were there, meeting up with Martin Oldgoth, my partner in DJ crime, Evil Stu and various others. Quick check and tweaks with the decks that (imo) were poorly placed in the venue, giving us both a sense of disorientation with the potted plants either side not really helping to create the right atmosphere! Regardless, the night started well with Grooving In Green , and the eventual arrival of Zombina & The Skeletones pushing the schedule out for everybody else! The Eden House were as great as I expecting, although the sound engineers really fucked up the first few songs with constant volume changes.

DJ wise personally, the night was a bit of an anticlimax for me having believing that this was going to be my biggest audience to date, but in relaity, I do beleive I played to more people at my last Coven event! With so many people leaving after the final band, regardless that the night was on until 4am, this kinda left Stu and me a bit empty, but the show must go on, and we carried on regardless. (DJ sets up soon) Come the end, we still had what few people left up and dancing which was reward in itself which was just as well as any monetary rewards were anywhere to be seen.

Saturday 31st October. Loopy & I were up stupidly early and headed down to breakfast with Paul in tow, who was feeling rough due to a bad pint of Kronenberg at The Spa from the night before, which prevented him from actually doing anything for the rest of the day/night. We all headed back to bed and kicked around the room till late afternoon before Loopy & I headed off to the Coliseum for the new horror-punk night, leaving Paul to suffer alone. Due to the lateness of the advertising, the night was very poorly attended with most of my friends without Spa tickets not even turning up, although we pulled in more than the Faith & The Muse acoustic gig the night before. Again personally, I enjoyed playing this night a hell of a lot more, and DJ Evil Stu and I kicked out some great tunes (again sets up later). Unfortunately, as this venue is new to the Whitby collective, it finished at 11.20pm, but I’m sure it’ll be back in use by next April with a much later finishing time. Everybody headed up to The Spa afterwards, but after traipsing home with all my CD cases, I was knackered and happy to stay home and watch the various horror movies on tv.

Sunday 1st November, we were awoken by the torrential rain and wind outside. Another cooked breakfast (without Paul) and again back to bed until the weather had calmed down. This was very frustrating as it was the first proper day for me to relax without anymore DJ duties to perform. We’d planned to head up to the abbey, and maybe a walk on the beach, but it just wasn’t going to happen. By 1pm, we all headed for The Resolution, only to find it was completely out of alcohol, so we headed over to The Shambles were we all seemed to meet everybody again, and promptly get happily drunk. Come evening, Loopy and I had promised ourselves all year to head down to The Red Chard for a relaxing and romantic meal, only to find the bloody place shut at 7.30pm! Not impressed. We settled for a rather disappointing meal back at Gatsby’s for convenience and took Loopy back home as she was very tired and didn’t fancy anymore clubbing. I headed out via The Res, which had now restocked it’s supplies, met up with the Bedford crowd, and headed to Raw for Nostalgia. Even by 9.15pm it was packed, and although I congratulate Martin Oldgoth for pulling in the punters and running a decent night, it was too packed for me, and by 12am, I’d had enough. I settled for more horror films (Halloween III) back at the B&B.

Monday 2nd November. Unfortunately, kick-out time was 10am, and with Paul not getting in till 5.30am, it was a bit of a job trying to get him mustered. Eventually at 9.40am he seemed to get himself into gear, but then we were all faced with having to wander round Whitby again waiting for him to sober up so we could drive home. Luckily, this gave Loopy & I a chance to head up to the abbey making up for Sundays disappointment. Eventually we left, but the journey home took longer and we were all very tired and fed up to get back home.

All in all, we a had a great time meeting up with friends, seen some great bands and its obviously an honour to be asked to play the main event, but I think we’ll be leaving it at least another year before we head back again.

All pics here for anybody remotely interested!

Network Maintenance - Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 04:00-05:00 GMT/UTC [Oct. 30th, 2009|05:17 pm]

lj_maintenance

[dwell]
EDIT: If you're reading this, our maintenance is OVER! The problem was not found on our equipment, which means we'll have to work with our ISP to fix this small problem -- which also means another maintenance window in the future -- but at least we have eliminated our side.

Thank you everyone, and a special shout out to [info]rekoil for giving me a great suggestion AND also the opportunity to feel like I've just called in to a local radio station.

Have a great day, night or afternoon wherever you may be.

---

Hi everyone, sorry for the late notice but I'm going to have to do some testing on 1 of our 4 internet circuits TONIGHT; Friday night or Saturday morning depending on which time zone you're in.

Most of us shouldn't notice any impact, though there may be some slowness or lag when I switch traffic on to our other ISP circuits and then another hit when I stop the tests. If a page won't load or times out, try hitting refresh 1 or 2 times and it should load then. If it doesn't work at all... trust me, I'll be typing really really really fast to try to undo whatever I just did. Hopefully you'll have some Halloween candy (if you're in the USA and celebrate that kind of thing) nearby to take away the bitterness of a small site outage. :(

Here's the handy-dandy Website That I Always Use to get a feel for when the maintenance will start in your area. Our site traffic historically dips on Friday afternoons until Saturday morning which is why we tend to pick this time for maintenance work.

tech details )

status.livejournal.org will, of course be updated before and after the maintenance window. Or else [info]marta will get mad at me. :D

LiveJournal Major Notes: Search super-tweak, postcards, and amazing user content! [Oct. 29th, 2009|10:53 am]

news

[theljstaff]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]

In response to user comments from last week, we want to let you know that we'll remain LJ cut-free for the next month in order to get more eyeballs on our evolving newsletter. As for product coverage, that continues to be our top priority. For more granular detail, however, we recommend you join [info]lj_releases.

Super-tweak for Yandex search

Some of our beta testers expressed privacy concerns using the Yandex search engine. Here's why: Last week, when you ran a search, you could see the usernames (and only the usernames) of everyone who commented on an entry, even if that entry was switched to Private or Friends Only after it was originally indexed. You could NOT see the actual comments from Friends Only or Private posts. In response to your input, we've implemented a fix to keep all user activity currently marked Friends Only or Private completely hidden. If you'd prefer your public content not to be indexed by Yandex, click here and use the settings labeled Search Inclusion (this covers your entire journal) and/or Comment Search Inclusion (which covers comments only). To test drive Yandex search now, click here.

Postcards from the edge

Several years ago, we asked LiveJournal users to send postcards to help us decorate our dull, white-washed offices. Since a good idea warrants repetition, we're at it again (same issue, new address). We hope you'll surround us with LiveJournal love by sending your postcards to Frank the Goat, Esq., c/o LiveJournal, Inc., 539 Bryant Street, Suite 210, San Francisco, CA 94107. We'll post snapshots right here. Be sure to include your username, since we'll randomly pick 10 lucky recipients to win free paid account time.

Conquer Writer's Block

Here are some excerpts from this week's most popular question of the day:

If a friend or relative makes a racist or homophobic remark, do you tend to confront them or let it slide? Are you more likely to confront them if it offends you directly or someone else who seems reluctant to speak up?
  1. I find it easier to stand up for other people, and i wouldn't let it slide if they made a rude or hurtful comment.
  2. Usually if a friend makes a racist or homophobic remark, I tend to let it slide. I think that while i would not say such things myself, I have no right to censor those around me.
  3. This happens all of the time. I confront some relatives, but I refuse to if they are drunk or watch Fox News.
  4. I'd let it slide if it was just a private remark... As much as I despise bigotry and intolerance, I know that you can't change people-they have to change themselves ...
  5. Confront! confront! confront! Politely, but without equivocation.
  6. SPEAK UP. Always, always, always speak up. Letting something slide lets ignorance win. No matter if it offends me directly, or someone else, I will confront the speaker and let them know that's not ok.
  7. I don't get offended personally. As an immigrant, woman, gay and person of color if I took every single potentially offensive remark seriously I wouldn't get anything done.
  8. I punch them in the balls. With my mind.
  9. I do speak up, but often very timidly because I feel that I'm white and therefore I don't really have any authority to lecture someone on what's racist and what isn't...
  10. Generally speaking, I do not let this shit fly, because it reduces me as a person, to this non-person and it replicates the destructive discourse that makes sure that sexual minorities, racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, trans people and every intersection thereof into something other than human... And sometimes... I'm just too tired to deal with it, so I roll my eyes, make a sarcastic remark and hope the conversation moves on quickly.
For more daily questions and user comments, join [info]writersblock. FYI, we don't want to invade your privacy, so we haven't credited individual users for their responses. We'd appreciate your feedback on this!

Spotlight community of the week

We can't resist making one last midnight trip to the ol' pumpkin patch. If you adore crazy costumes, fiendish festivities, and bottomless candy consumption as much as we do, this community has just what it takes to light up your jack-o-lantern.

Last nigths horror feature was 1963s The Ghost. Personally, I think it would have worked better in black & white, but was still an enjoyable Barbara Steele flick. No idea what I'll watch tonight, but I doubt I'll be able to sleep through sheer excitement of the coming weekend!

"Silhouette One" and "Rising Sun Two, Three and Four" [Oct. 28th, 2009|07:33 am]

[mood | hyper]
[music |Tristania - Equilibrium]

I'm posting my weekly images early today as I'm off to Whitby tomorrow morning for the Goth weekend.  So looking forward to meeting some old friends and making some new ones and doing a couple of shoots while I'm there.  As of my last post, today's images are all from September's "Silhouette" shoot with Amaeya, Neo Geisha and Arcane Kai.  These also have a strong Japanese influence and the "Rising Sun" images have a massive nod in the Manga direction.

I actually shot with Neo Geisha again this last Monday and she was excellent as usual!  We did some night shots in Birmingham city centre, with the city lights in the background and I'll hopefully share those with you next Friday.

I've only posted my favourite images from the "Silhouette" shoot, so anyone who wants to see the full set, can find them here -http://www.flickr.com/photos/davecharsley/sets/72157622466407784/

You must make a friend of horror... [Oct. 27th, 2009|09:45 am]

nephilimbabe
...Which is not particularly difficult with the dark nights drawing in so quickly now. Around 3pm I huddled under a blanket and watched 1988s Return of the Living Dead Part II, until Loopy came home from work, then come evening we watched 1964s Castle of Blood which if I'm perfectly honest, really did scare me, but then that was the plan!

Anybody else totally bored by the new Assemblage 23 album?

Personally, I'm enjoying the remastered Kraftwerk Radio-Activity a hell of a lot more.
